NOVELIST MAHFUZ'S CONDITION WORSENS

Egyptian writer and Nobel literature prize laureate NAGIB MAHFUZ has been placed on an artificial respirator after suffering a serious haemorrhage of the colon.

The prolific author, who has penned around 40 novels, has also required a blood transfusion.

Mahfuz, 94, was hospitalised last month (16JUL06) for kidney problems and pneumonia.

He became the first Arab writer to be awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1988.
