SCARED BANDMATES PROMPTED AUDIOSLAVE STAR TO SEEK HELP

AUDIOSLAVE frontman CHRIS CORNELL checked into rehab after recording the rock supergroup's first album after realising how his substance abuse problems were affecting his band.

The former SOUNDGARDEN star admits his alcoholism and drug use was at its worst while he was recording Audioslave's eponymous debut in 2002 - prompting him to quit and later rejoin the group.

A 'breakdown' led to him seeking counselling for a substance abuse problem he developed over a decade ago when he fronted grunge gods Soundgarden.

He tells Spin magazine, "Realising how I was affecting people I cared about made a big difference. The other three members of Audioslave didn't know me that well, and when we started making the first record, I was pretty much at my worst.

"We were writing great songs, but then it got scary for them... I felt a sense of sadness and fear in them that made me wake up.

"It was being around people who weren't part of the bad part of my life that I then saw how bad it was."

DUFF DONATES TO DISASTER RECOVERY

HILARY DUFF will make an appearance in New Orleans, Louisiana next Tuesday (29AUG06) to mark the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Duff has donated 2.5 million meals for Katrina relief through nonprofit organisation USA Harvest and will deliver food, backpacks and miscellaneous material throughout the day.

The singer/actress will visit schools, a disaster-recovery centre and other locations with charity founder STAN CURTIS.

The WHY NOT singer will make the morning announcements and meet with fans at Nelson Charter School, serve lunch at Alice M Harte Elementary School, speak at Edna Karr High School and dish up dinner at Camp Hope in St Bernard Parish.

AKON RECREATES 48 HOURS IN NEW VIDEO

R+B sensation AKON is recreating cult movie 48 HOURS in his new video SMACK THAT with EMINEM and actor ERIC ROBERTS.

The Senegalese singer takes on EDDIE MURPHY's convict REGGIE HAMMOND from the 1982 film, while video regular Roberts - the brother of Oscar winner JULIA - appears as NICK NOLTE's cop character JACK CATES.

Eminem plays Akon's best friend, who helps the singer locate the girl he has to track down in a Los Angeles club after cops strike a deal to let the LONELY singer walk free from his prison cell if he helps them find their chief prey.

A source close to the rapper says, "Eminem was originally slated to play a cop, but he did not want to play a detective."

It's not the first time Akon and Eminem have worked together on a video - they teamed up to stage a bank robbery together in rapper OBIE TRICE's promo SNITCH.

NAVARRO SEPARATES HIMSELF FROM CONTESTANTS

DAVE NAVARRO has toughened up for the latest installment of his reality talent competition ROCK STAR: SUPERNOVA after allegations he was too nice to contestants during the show's first season.

The series follows the search for a vocalist to join a new rock band being formed by ex-MOTLEY CRUE drummer TOMMY LEE, former METALLICA bassist JASON NEWSTED and one-time GUNS N' ROSES guitarist GILBEY CLARKE.

Navarro claims he became too friendly with contestants last season and allowed his personal feelings to influence his judging duties.

The rocker insists he is harder this season saying, "You know, what it is to be perfectly honest with you, last season I hung out with the contestants quite a bit and I really got to know them as people.

"When you're sitting there trying to judge them and you have a personal relationship with them, it's very difficult to be very critical.

"This season what I do is I stay as far away from them as possible. I don't want to get emotionally connected and then have to tell them they suck!"

MCCREADY: 'I'M NOT GUILTY NOW'

LATEST: Troubled country singer MINDY McCREADY has staged a remarkable plea turnaround in court - now insisting she's not guilty of a probation violation at all.

The GUYS DO IT ALL THE TIME hitmaker, 30, previously admitted violating her probation on a 2004 drug charge by driving on a suspended license and leaving Tennessee for Florida without permission.

But now her attorney, LEE DRYER, claims the singer's relatives in Florida have uncovered new evidence proving her license was reinstated the day before she was arrested on the driving charge in May 2005.

A Nashville jury acquitted McCready last month (JUL06) of drink driving but convicted her of driving on the suspended license.

At a Franklin, Tennessee hearing yesterday (22AUG06) - where McCready was due to find out if she'd face jail for the violation - Dryer petitioned for a new trial saying, "It's going to be our position that her license was not truly suspended although the records in the Department of Safety show that it was."

Williamson County Judge JEFF BIVINS said he would postpone a decision in the case until Nashville courts rule on the matter but argued McCready's failure to get permission to travel to Florida in 2005 was still at issue.

DOHERTY UNDER GUARD IN REHAB

Troubled British rocker PETE DOHERTY has been assigned a security guard after lashing out at a nurse in rehab.

The BABYSHAMBLES singer is currently undergoing treatment for drug addiction at London's celeb clinic The Priory, but allegedly caused chaos when he vented his frustration at a male employee by punching him in the chest before trashing his own room on Sunday (20AUG06).

A pal tells British newspaper the Daily Mirror, "Pete flipped out because he doesn't want to be there and wants to get out. A nurse was trying to encourage him to get more involved in the therapy sessions when Pete suddenly went beserk.

"He started kicking the door and slamming the walls. As the nurse tried to restrain him he punched him in the chest. He was out of control.

"His behaviour was appalling. Pete's lucky that the nurse was not hurt."

Doherty pleaded guilty to drug possession charges last week (18AUG06), and has been ordered to stay at The Priory until he is sentenced next month (SEP06).

PARAMOUNT DUMPS CRUISE

TOM CRUISE has been unceremoniously dumped by his Paramount studio partners for his sofa-jumping antics on TV.

Revered Paramount boss SUMNER REDSTONE has ended his company's 14-year relationship with Cruise/Wagner Productions because he no longer wants to be associated with the movie star.

Redstone tells newspaper The Wall Street Journal he believes Cruise's bizarre antics on US TV shows like OPRAH and TODAY had a negative effect on the box office take of Paramount's 2005 summer blockbuster WAR OF THE WORLDS.

He snipes, "As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal... His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount."

JOVI: 'NO MORE ACTING'

JON BON JOVI has threatened never to act again after slamming Hollywood as ''a rotten existence''.

The 44-year-old has previously taken time out of his hugely successful rock career with BON JOVI to appear in a string of television and film roles - most recently political series THE WEST WING and PUCKED.

Bon Jovi says of Tinseltown, "It's a pretty rotten existence to be in.

"It is a lot better for me being the director, producer and star when you make a record than it is to go and stand in that long line and wait for your audition."

CAPRICE PLEADS 'ALCOHOL HALITOSIS' LOOPHOLE

LATEST: Model CAPRICE BOURRET's solicitor has told a London court ''alcohol halitosis'' does not merit a minimum one-year driving ban penalty.

The 34-year-old Texan faces the ban after being arrested in central London on 10 December 2005. She subsequently failed a test, which showed her to have more than the legal limit of alcohol in her blood.

Caprice pleaded guilty to drink driving, but her legal representative NICK FREEMAN, who is nicknamed 'Mr Loophole' in the UK, told Highbury Magistrate's Court yesterday (22AUG06) that the smell of alcohol in her breath did not mean she was intoxicated.

He said, "She had had a lot to drink. I would not concede on her behalf that she was too drunk to remember.

"There is a total absence of any suggestion of intoxication in this case. Nobody is suggesting that she was displaying any symptoms at all other than alcohol halitosis."

Freeman previously argued his client's alcohol levels were inflated by the anti-histamine drug Cipro which she had taken for a bladder infection.

District Judge EMMA ARBUTHNOT will deliver her judgement on Friday (25AUG06).

THE KNACK STAR GARY DIES AT 54

THE KNACK drummer BRUCE GARY has lost his battle with lymphoma. He was 54.

The MY SHARONA hitmaker is also famous for producing archive JIMI HENDRIX recordings and performing behind stars like BOB DYLAN, SHERYL CROW, GEORGE HARRISON and BETTE MIDLER.

Biographer and promoter MARTIN LEWIS says, "He looked as tall and stick-thin as the average Brit rocker - yet his personality was as warm, cosy and haimish as your favourite Jewish grandmother. With a mischievous twinkle.

"I only had the gift of knowing Bruce for the past few years. I first met him when I was producing some benefit shows and needed a drummer to play with the highly-ranked Brits-in-exile I'd assembled.

"It needed a drummer of stature to play with all of those characters - and I found that and more in Bruce. He played like a dervish and provided the unity that bound the unrehearsed musicians together.

"Watching him thrash the drums on SPENCER DAVIS' I'M A MAN and ANDY SUMMERS' acid-tinged take on the VENTURES' WALK DON'T RUN was to see a man possessed - possessed of the pure passion of rock 'n' roll."
