DOHERTY MUM'S ALL NIGHT VIGIL FOR SON

PETE DOHERTY's ongoing drug problems are putting a strain on his parents' marriage - because his mother JACKIE refuses to switch off her mobile phone at night in case she receives a call from the troubled British rocker.

The strain of being the mother of the BABYSHAMBLES frontman has led Jackie and her husband, also called PETER, to sleep in separate rooms.

The 52-year-old says, "I feel I have to be contactable at all times. So there is no peace in the house.

"I won't give up my son and I can't give up my husband. If my husband chose to leave me that's his decision."

The on/off boyfriend of supermodel KATE MOSS wasn't always such a cause for concern however - during his childhood Pete was a choirboy and aspiring poet.

Jackie explains, "I remember being so proud of all my children, who were bright, upright citizens. They would never take drugs or break the law.

"We haven't suffered as much as other families of junkies. He's never stolen from us, never beaten us for money."

SUGABABES NEARLY CALLED IT A DAY

British girl group SUGABABES were on the verge of splitting when MUTYA BUENA left the group last November (05).

HEIDI RANGE and KEISHA BUCHANAN and were stunned by Buena's decision to quit the successful three piece, despite enjoying chart-topping hits such as FREAK LIKE ME and HOLE IN THE HEAD.

Range says, "It was a complete shock to Keisha and I and we thought at one stage, that's it - we're going to split up."

It was their manager, MARK HARGREAVES, who persuaded the girls to stick with it and recruit new member AMELLE BERRABAH as a replacement for Buena.

Buchanan says, "It was a bittersweet time. I was upset Mutya had gone - we'd known each other since she was nine - but really happy Amelle could join us.

"The change has been good. We're doing as well as ever."

CONNERY'S SOCCER DREAM

Legendary actor SIR SEAN CONNERY came close to trialling for top English soccer club Manchester United.

The Scots JAMES BOND star harboured ambitions to be a footballer from an early age and was acting with a travelling play, when one of the world's biggest clubs expressed an interest.

The 75-year-old tells British film magazine Empire, "I was travelling with the play and in each town we played soccer.

"We were in Manchester for three months and Man United were interested.

"But, I discussed it with a guy who was in the play who said, 'I thought you might want to be an actor. What happens if you go to soccer and you break a leg or you don't make the team?' That was the moment."

The TRUE ROMANCE actress admits acting on screen doesn't come naturally to her.

She says, "I used to be so scared of the camera. It was this big, ominous presence.

"Sometimes I still get shy when I see it. Occasionally, actors say, 'Can everyone on the set move out of my eyeline because it's distracting.'

"Sometimes I feel that with the camera, 'Can you get that camera out of the room too?'"

AGUILERA TOPS UK ALBUM CHART

CHRISTINA AGUILERA's new LP BACK TO BASICS has shot straight to the top of the UK album chart.

The disc is Aguilera's third release, but it's the first time she has topped the British charts.

It knocks JAMES MORRISON's UNDISCOVERED to number two, with SNOW PATROL at three, ORSON four and THE KOOKS five.

SHAKIRA has made it four weeks in a row at the top of the singles chart with HIPS DON'T LIE. CHAMILLIONAIRE is number two with RIDIN', DAVID GUETTA VS THE EGG is three with LOVE DON'T LET ME GO (WALKING AWAY); ARCTIC MONKEYS are four and CASCADA five.

C-MURDER BACK UNDER HOUSE ARREST

LATEST: A US judge has reinstated COREY 'C-MURDER' MILLER's house arrest order, bringing an end to the rapper's month of freedom.

The decision comes just days after a Louisiana appeals court ruled a judge acted improperly when she lifted C-Murder's house arrest in July (06).

Between now and the rapper's retrial on second-degree murder charges, he'll be confined to his home and barred from leaving at any time, except to appear for court hearings.

He is accused of shooting 16-year-old STEVEN THOMAS in the chest during a fight in 2002 outside a nightclub in Harvey, Louisiana.

C-Murder was originally convicted of the crime, but Louisiana District Court Judge MARTHA SASSONE granted him a new trial.

If convicted, he faces life in prison.

FEDERLINE READY TO ROCK AWARD SHOW

BRITNEY SPEARS' husband KEVIN FEDERLINE is thrilled he gets the chance to perform at the Teen Choice Awards and insists the audience is going to be blown away by his music.

Federline is set to make his nationally televised debut as a rapper during the show in Los Angeles tonight (20AUG06).

He tells American publication People, "It was (the) right time, right moment. I've been getting people ready, I think, you know.

"Now I think they're ready. I'm ready. I've been getting myself ready. It's taken me a year almost. I mean I'm ready to perform, my music is ready to be heard."

The former back-up dancer claims he's not nervous about his debut and is ready to wow the audience with his performance.

He adds, "I'm not freaked out at all, man. There ain't no way. I'm ready. It's going to be incredible. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve here and there.

"I think I'm going to go for the 'oh-my-God' factor. That's what I'm aiming for."

JAZZ PIANIST DUKE JORDAN DIES

DUKE JORDAN, a jazz pianist best known for his influential work with saxophonist CHARLIE PARKER in his well-regarded quintet of the 1940s, has died. He was 84.

Jordan died on 8 August (06) in Valby, a suburb of Copenhagen, Denmark, according to the US Embassy in the Danish capital. The cause of death has not been revealed.

Parker's quintet, which also featured MILES DAVIS on trumpet, MAX ROACH on drums and TOMMY POTTER on bass, worked together form 1946 to 1948.

After leaving Parker's band, Jordan played with saxophonists SONNY STITT, GENE AMMONS and STAN GETZ.

By the mid-1950s he was leading his own bands and composing music which included JORDU, a popular jazz canon.

He also composed part of the soundtrack for the 1959 ROGER VADIM film LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES.

Jordan worked mainly in Europe, leading small groups beginning the early 1970s.

After visiting Copenhagen in 1973, he settled there in 1978 and remained there until the end of his life.

MAN CONVICTED OF KILLING HOUSE OF FREAKS ROCKER

RICKY JOVAN GRAY was convicted on Thursday (17AUG06) of killing former HOUSE OF FREAKS bandmember BRYAN HARVEY, Harvey's wife KATHRYN and their two young daughters.

The family members were found in the basement of their burning home - bound, beaten with a hammer and stabbed with their throats cut - in Richmond, Virginia on New Year's Day (01JAN06).

Harvey was a guitarist and singer for the rock duo House of Freaks, who released five albums between 1987 and 1995.

Kathryn Harvey's half-brother, actor STEVEN CULP, who played REX VAN DE KAMP on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, testified during the trial.

Culp sobbed during his testimony saying, "I can't look at my kids without...wondering if they're going to be alive at the end of the week. It's done something to me.

"It's bottomless, you know? There's no end to it."

The jury took just 30 minutes to convict Gray, who could face the death penalty when he is sentenced.

LOPEZ AND GERE ARE DANCING FLOPS

Pop superstar JENNIFER LOPEZ and Hollywood actor RICHARD GERE have both appeared twice in a new poll for the worst dance films of all time.

In a survey by British drinks firm Shloer, the Latina beauty came in at number seven for her performance in 1990 film LAMBADA, as well as 2004's SHALL WE DANCE, also starring Gere, at nine.

Gere also made the list for his appearance in CHICAGO, which made number eight on the list.

TUNNEY DEVELOPS A CRUSH ON WELL-SPOKEN AFFLECK

JENNIFER GARNER had better watch her back - another actress has desires on her husband, BEN AFFLECK.

THE CRAFT star ROBIN TUNNEY, who plays the psychotic girlfriend of Affleck's character in new film HOLLYWOODLAND, admits she fell for the movie star's charms on the set of the movie.

She says, "He has a way of making you feel comfortable. Ben is captivating immediately; when he walks into a room your eyes go to him and it's not because he's famous.

"He's tall and well spoken and so eloquent and when he tells a story he has such a way with words... You can't take your eyes off of him.

"I'm not usually this nice and saccharine so I'm gonna stop."

MILLER COMPLETES SCREENPLAY

PRISON BREAK star WENTWORTH MILLER is eyeing a second career as a writer after completing his first screenplay.

The heart-throb, who plays tattooed jailbird MICHAEL SCOFIELD in the hit prison show, has used his time off from the program to get busy at his PC.

He says, "It's a love story with a (ALFRED) HITCHCOCK twist. A cross between THE STEPFATHER, SHADOW OF A DOUBT and DRACULA mythology.

GERVAIS AND MCKELLEN BATTLE OVER SCRIPT

Hollywood star SIR IAN McKELLEN battled with British comedian RICKY GERVAIS over the script for his appearance in THE OFFICE's creator's comedy EXTRAS.

McKellen plays himself in an episode of the forthcoming second series of the BBC show, which parodies celebrities and their diva-like behaviour.

Writing on his official site, McKellen says he found it difficult to follow the initial script and attempted to rewrite his lines, but has not admitted the final outcome of the scene.

He says, "There are many jokes in this episode of Extras, one of them being that Ian McKellen is gay and also that he is unsufferably pompous.

"That makes for tricky territory, particularly when the script has been written by two experts in irony, masters of the put-down, the snigger and the snub, Ricky Gervais and his partner (in, I'm pretty sure, the non-sexual sense) STEPHEN MERCHANT."

In the script, McKellen insists on being referred to as Sir Ian - despite the fact the LORD OF THE RINGS actor does not use the title professionally.

He explains, "I called Ricky Gervais to suggest the script had got me wrong, a little. I am one of those knights who prefers not to use the title professionally. Perhaps Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant had confused me with another acting 'Sir'.

"On his mobile, Ricky Gervais was non-committal. You can judge the compromise we made when the episode is aired later this year."

ALLEN: 'TWEEDY TRACK WAS A JOKE'

British star LILY ALLEN is amused by CHERYL TWEEDY's reaction to the chart-topper's

The B-side track, simply titled CHERYL TWEEDY, is supposedly a musing on how much Allen admires the GIRLS ALOUD singer, including the line, 'I wish I looked like Cheryl Tweedy'.

Tweedy, thrilled with the acknowledgement, said at the time, "I'm really flattered that Lily's written a track about me. I don't know why she sings about wanting to be as pretty as me, as she looks stunning. I'd like to look like her."

But Allen thinks the LOVE MACHINE star's gracious response is hilarious, because the song was a sarcastic joke.

She says, "I don't want to look like Cheryl Tweedy! It's tongue in cheek. It's meant to be ironic.

"I don't have anything against her as a human being. It was a joke that not many people got. Of course nobody really wants to look like Cheryl, they just think they do."

RHYMES ARRESTED OVER ASSAULT ALLEGATIONS

Hip-hop star BUSTA RHYMES has finally spoken to cops about the unsolved murder of his bodyguard, after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a man at a New York City concert last night (11AUG06).

The rapper, real name TREVOR SMITH, was taken into custody at 8pm over allegations he and two members of his entourage assaulted ROBERTO LEBRON, who was attending the Heineken AmsterJam Festival on Randalls Island, the New York Daily News reports.

Smith, 34, spent a few hours in at the 13th Precinct police station in Manhattan, where officers took the opportunity to talk to the rapper about the 5 February (06) murder of ISRAEL RAMIREZ.

The father-of-three, 29, was fatally shot at a Brooklyn recording studio while Smith was shooting the video for his song TOUCH IT (REMIX). The murderer has still not been found.

A police source tell the Daily News, "I don't know if this is normally something he would even be arrested for. But his bouncer was killed and he didn't want to cooperate.

"This is our way of dealing with it."

New York Police Commissioner RAYMOND KELLY has publicly criticised Smith was failing to co-operate with the murder investigation, saying, "We believe Busta Rhymes may have been on the street when the shooting took place."

TV BOSSES BATTLE OVER MILLS' STORY

A massive bidding war has broken out over the rights to HEATHER MILLS' first TV interview since her split from SIR PAUL McCARTNEY.

British broadcaster BBC and commercial rival ITV are both flaunting their biggest interviewers in the hope of obtaining what could be the most sensational TV interview since MARTIN BASHIR interviewed DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES for the BBC in 1995.

In their attempts to woo the 38-year-old former model, ITV are in talks with two of the UK's most experienced interviewers: inoffensive chat show host MICHAEL PARKINSON or legendary newscaster SIR TREVOR MACDONALD.

An ITV spokesman says, "We're looking at Parkinson, but most probably Sir Trevor, because Heather has expressed admiration for his methods in the past. It's sure to be a massive ratings-puller."

The BBC are hoping key news anchor FIONA BRUCE will be enough to tempt Mills to reveal all the details of the couple's four-year marriage on air.
