PETTY REFUSED TO PLAY HUDSON'S SONG

TOM PETTY fears he upset KATE HUDSON when her estranged husband's band THE BLACK CROWES supported him on a US tour last year (05) - because he refused to play her favourite tune live.

Hudson asked Petty to play his tune ROOM AT THE TOP every night for her, but the rocker always refused - because the song brings back terrible memories for him.

Admitting he wrote the gloomy song in the middle of a terrible depression, Petty explains, "I never said it to her but it would be a cold day in hell before I play that (song).

"Things were so bad in my life when I was making (album) ECHO that there's songs I don't even remember writing."
