JACK WHITE's new band THE RACONTEURS stole the show at this weekend's (04-06AUG06) Lollapalooza festival in Illinois by performing a string of other peoples' tunes.
The STEADY AS SHE GOES four-piece tackled GNARLS BARKLEY's summer smash-hit CRAZY, DAVID BOWIE's IT AIN'T EASY and even NANCY SINATRA's BANG, BANG (MY BABY SHOT ME DOWN) as they wowed the Grant Park, Chicago crowd on Friday night (04AUG06).
The Raconteurs weren't the only ones playing tribute tracks on Friday - rockers PANIC! AT THE DISCO also thrilled music fans with their rendition of SMASHING PUMPKINS' TONIGHT, TONIGHT.
Another Friday night highlight came when rockers SLEATER-KINNEY performed their final festival date in a 12-year career.
The trio recently announced plans for an "indefinite hiatus" and will play two final shows in their native Portland, Oregon.
As WENN went to press, the final tally of fans who attended former JANE'S ADDICTION star PERRY FARRELL's revived festival was expected to hit 150,000.
More than 120 acts performed on Lollapalooza's eight stages including rapper KANYE WEST, the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS and SONIC YOUTH.
Chicago police are calling the event a huge success. During a press conference on Saturday night, city law officials were celebrating the fact there had been no arrests or disturbances.
The only concern among organisers and fans was the temperature - revellers suffered sunburn and dehydration-related problems on Friday, but the temperatures cooled for performances on Saturday and Sunday.
The festival ended last night (06AUG06) with a headlining set from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
