FERRELL RACES TO NUMBER ONE WITH NASCAR FILM

Funnyman WILL FERRELL's NASCAR comedy TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY has raced to the top of the US box office with a staggering $47 million (GBP26.1 million) opening weekend take.

The film, about a clueless racecar driver, led four new entries in the new top 10, but made more money than the remainder of the top five put together.

Animated comedy BARNYARD came in a distant second with a $16 million (GBP8.9 million) opening weekend take.

Former number ones PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST and MIAMI VICE slipped to three and four respectively.

Horror movie THE DESCENT debuted at number five with $8.8 million (GBP4.9 million).
