DJ STAR ESCAPES CHARGES

Disgraced DJ TROI TORAIN, sacked in May (06) after making on-air racial and sexual comments about a rival DJ's wife and four-year-old daughter, has won his battle to have criminal charges against him dropped.

A New York judge on Thursday (27JUL06) dismissed charges of endangering a child's welfare and weapon possession as long as the radio personality stays out of trouble for six months.

Assistant US Attorney Penelope Brady welcomed the ruling, insisting, "It serves the best interest of the four-year-old victim by sparing the victim any further attention."

Torain, better known as DJ Star on Power 105.1, hailed the judgment as a victory for freedom of speech, and argued he had only retaliated to similarly degrading personal comments made by rival DJs including Hot 97 host DJ ENVY, real name RAASHAUN CASEY, when he threatened to sexually abuse his little girl and offered $500 (GBP280) for details about where she went to school.

He said, "I never should have been arrested in the first place. This was not a crime."
