New details of the plane crash which claimed the lives of JOHN F KENNEDY JR and his wife suggest officials tried to cover up the findings of investigators because they made the celebrity pilot look bad.

The 1999 tragedy was blamed on pilot error, but biographer C DAVID HEYMANN has uncovered evidence that suggests Kennedy should never have been flying in the first place.

In his new book, TRIALS + TRAGEDY, the acclaimed Kennedy family biographer claims officials covered up their findings so as not to embarrass America's 'royal family'.

Heymann alleges JFK Jr was "impaired" while piloting the fateful flight, which claimed his life and those of his wife and sister-in-law.

Heymann says, "The tests that were administered post-mortem demonstrate that he was impaired, and these were the tests not made available to the public.

"The flight was ill-fated from the beginning, and it was not just a question of pilot error.

"A good indication something was extraordinarily wrong that evening was the fact that 11 minutes after taking off... John flew in the direct path of an approaching American Airlines jet... and could not be reached by the control tower on his in-plane radio.

"I don't know why they sat on this material or why his impairment was also not disclosed."
