MCKELLEN IS UK'S TOP GAY

SIR IAN McKELLEN has beaten SIR ELTON JOHN to the position of the most influential homosexual icon in the UK, in a list to mark the end of the Europe-wide gay festival EuroPride.

British newspaper the Independent ignored the THE DA VINCI CODE star's previous protestations that he was tired of being a gay icon, and placed him atop the 'Pink List'.

Elton made it to number two in the list of powerful media and cultural figures, while European Union Trade Commissioner PETER MANDELSON was at number five.

The publication states: "There can be few actors who manage to produce such extraordinary variety and quality while connecting with so many people. He is our number one."
