LATEST: New York's Department of Sanitation are eager to meet their new recruit BOY GEORGE, after he was sentenced to five days of community service with them on Monday (26JUN06).
The former CULTURE CLUB frontman, real name GEORGE O'DOWD, was sentenced in Manhattan Criminal Court for falsely reporting a burglary at his Little Italy apartment in October 2005.
Judge ANTHONY FERRARA has ordered O'Dowd, 45, to complete the service by the end of August (06), much to the delight of the street cleaners.
Sanitation spokesman KEITH MELLIS enthuses, "He will be part of our team. We won't know exactly what he will be doing for several weeks, though."
O'Dowd criticised the sentencing, saying it would be more helpful to the community if he perform at an AIDS fundraising concert.
