MRS WORLD PAGEANT FIASCO AS WRONG BEAUTY IS CROWNED

Chaos reigned at the MRS WORLD beauty pageant in St Petersburg, Russia at the weekend (10JUN06) when the wrong queen was crowned the winner.

A sobbing Mrs Costa Rica, ANDREA BERMUDEZ ROMERO, was handed the winning tiara while a devastated Mrs Russia, SOFIA ARZHAKOVSKAYA - the actual winner - stood and watched the proceedings in disbelief.

Organisers frantically tried to correct the error immediately but several minutes passed before the celebrations onstage could be halted - and the winner re-announced.

Tempers flared backstage after Mrs Costa Rica was led offstage in tears as beauty queens clashed with show bosses over the muddled climax.

One of the contestants told journalists, "It's a complete fiasco."
