Hip-hop star LEEHOM WANG was the big winner at Saturday's (10JUN06) Golden Melody Awards, the Chinese-language Grammys, after taking home Best Mandarin Male Singer.
Wang confessed he hated his voice at the Taipei Arena, Taiwan, prizegiving, and promised he'd improve in the coming years saying, "I think I wasn't very good at singing before but I am determined to practice every day and practice makes perfect... I will continue the hard work."
In the female category Singapore's singer-songwriter TANYA CHUA beat off fierce competition from STEFANIE SUN, Malaysia's JASMINE LEONG, PEENY TAI as well as Taiwan's CHEER CHEN with her latest work AMPHIBIAN.
Nomination leader DAVID TAO, a producer and singer, just took home Best Mandarin Pop Album for THE GREAT LEAP 2005, despite six nods.
Meanwhile resurgent aboriginal singer HU DEFU celebrated his return to the music industry after a 30 year absence with Song of the Year PACIFIC WIND, which was also voted to boast the Best Lyrics.
Hu - also known as KIMBO - was branded the Taiwanese BOB DYLAN for his protest songs in the 1960s and 70s, when the island was still under martial law.
