JAZZ GREAT RUIZ DEAD AFTER MYSTERY ACCIDENT
Jazz great HILTON RUIZ has died in New Orleans, Louisiana, after a mysterious accident, which is still under investigation.
The 54-year-old pianist was admitted to hospital in a coma on 19 May (06) after taking a blow to the head. It isn't known whether his wound was the result of a fall or an assault.
The New Jersey-based Latin jazz maestro was widely recognised as one of the most accomplished pianists in the genre.
He recorded 24 solo albums and worked with the top names in Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz.
Ruiz had just completed work on a benefit album for the Hurricane Katrina relief effort when he was admitted to hospital.
A planned concert, which was to be staged as WENN went to press to raise funds for Ruiz's medical costs, will now be turned into a celebration of the pianist's life and career. All proceeds will go towards his funeral costs.
