WINNER TURNS DOWN OBE

British director MICHAEL WINNER has turned down an honour from QUEEN ELIZABETH II because it's "what you get if you clean toilets".

The DEATH WISH film-maker was selected for an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen's 80th birthday honours list, for his work establishing a memorial for police officers killed in duty.

But Winner, 70, disapproves of other recipients of the prize.

He says, "An OBE is what you get if you clean the toilets well at King's Cross station.

"I'm very glad that they recognise my considerable skills as a toilet cleaner.

"But when you look at the rubbish who are getting these awards and the absolute non-service they have given to the nation other than financing or working for political parties, you say, 'What company am I in?'"
