Actor TIMOTHY DALTON's role as JAMES BOND proved so unsuccessful, film-makers considered never making another Bond movie.
Recently found letters written by KENNETH MAIDMENT, the former vice-president of Columbia Pictures, have shown how perilously close to death the infamous spy movie became.
There was serious concerns after a string of mediocre box-office takings for the Bond films starring Dalton in the late 1980s.
Maidment writes: "The prospect of a further Bond film seems highly uncertain. I pointed out in my 1984 valuation that there was a big question mark over the future of James Bond films.
"The last two pictures have starred Timothy Dalton but sadly the results have, unfortunately not had the same box-office success."
Timothy Dalton appeared in two Bond films - THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS (1987) and LICENCE TO KILL (1989) before being replaced by PIERCE BROSNAN.
