The band's two-disc set STADIUM ARCADIUM sold 442,500 copies, a record for the Los Angeles-based quartet.
According to the group's spokeswoman, the album also topped the charts in Austria, Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland.
Rocker NEIL YOUNG's tirade against US President GEORGE W BUSH, LIVING WITH WAR, debuted to less impressive numbers, claiming the number 15 spot selling 60,000 copies.
Another veteran musician had better luck - PAUL SIMON's new album, SURPRISE debuted at number 14, selling 61,000 copies, marking his best chart entrance to date.
