Music duo GNARLS BARKLEY felt free to experiment while recording their hit debut album ST ELSEWHERE, because they didn't think anyone would ever listen to it.
The duo, which consists of GORILLAZ producer DANGER MOUSE and rapper CEE-LO, even came close to naming their debut album WHO CARES?
The pair produced the hit single CRAZY - the first down-load-only single to hit number one on the UK charts.
Cee-Lo explains, "While writing Crazy, I thought, maybe I'm crazy to try to walk a tightrope without a net."
Danger Mouse credits the album's eclectic mix of psychedelia, gospel, funk and trip-hop to the fact they weren't attached to a record label.
He says, "We paid for it out of our own pockets and that freed us to be truly experimental. We didn't know if it would work, but we think we got it right."
