MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE III SINKS POSEIDON AT US BOX OFFICE

MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE III has scored a second weekend at the top of the US box office, fighting off maritime disaster film POSEIDON.

After underwhelming moviegoers last weekend, the TOM CRUISE thriller was still able to retain first place with ticket sales of $24.5 million (GBP13.6 million).

German director WOLFGANG PETERSON'S $150 million (GBP83 million) remake of the 1972 film THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE received poor reviews and opened in second place with $20.3 million (GBP11.3 million).

LINDSAY LOHAN's romantic comedy, JUST MY LUCK, landed in fourth place with a modest $5.5 million (GBP3.1 million) debut.

Summer Hollywood special effects extravaganzas have so far been struggling at the US box office, but the controversial adaptation of THE DA VINCI CODE is expected to boost box office returns when it opens worldwide next weekend (19MAY06).
