Acclaimed British playwright ALAN BENNETT is celebrating transatlantic success after his Broadway hit THE HISTORY BOYS was named play of the year by the New York Drama Critics' Circle last week (ends12MAY06).

Alan Bennett at The British Book Awards held at Grosvenor House, London, England - 29.03.06

The accolade makes Bennett hot favourite to pick up a prestigious Tony award, with nominations announced on Tuesday (16MAY06).

His play follows a class of young men desperate to win university places at Oxford or Cambridge, as well as the teachers pushing them for success.

Bennett, famed for his UK television-adapted series TALKING HEADS, accepted the Critics' award just days after he was made a freeman of his home city Leeds, in northern England.

Other plays which were recognised include musical THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, celebrating 1920s stage shows, and the Broadway revival of SWEENEY TODD.
