ROSITA FERNANDEZ DIES

Tejano singer ROSITA FERNANDEZ died on Tuesday (02MAY06) in a San Antonio, Texas, hospice after a prolonged period of ill health. She was 88.

Fernandez - who was known affectionately as Rosita - was one of the first Mexican-Americans to appear on US national TV after she sprung to prominence on Texan radio shows in the 1930s.

Rosita starred in several movies, most prominently alongside JOHN WAYNE in 1960 western THE ALAMO, and sang at former US President JIMMY CATER's inauguration in 1976, and for Pope JOHN PAUL II when he visited San Antonio in 1987.

A bridge over the San Antonio River is called 'Rosita's Bridge' in honour of Fernandez.
