The Chinese film had been held up by a dispute by investors.

The movie is based on the bestselling novel by SU TONG and marks the debut of cinematographer HON YONG, who also adapted the screenplay.

According to Asian Union Film + Media president DONG PING, "The funding of the movie came from a variety of sources.

"Some of the investors were really greenhands at movies. So there were many quarrels and fights on issues such as copyright and distribution rights."

The film premiered at the Tokyo fest in November 2004, but has since been recut and has not been released anywhere in the world.

The movie will now be released in time for the week-long May holiday in China.
