MICHAEL 'HOOKED ON DRUGS TO EASE MOURNING'

GEORGE MICHAEL's cousin ANDREAS GEORGIOU suspects the singer's alleged drug addiction stems from the loss of his mother and his lover ANSELMO FELEPPA.

Andreas believes the CARELESS WHISPER hitmaker, who was recently arrested after being found slumped at the wheel of his car with a quantity of cannabis, is still in mourning and uses drugs to ease his pain.

However, he readily admits the drug habit is not a new one.

Georgiou tells British newspaper the Daily Mirror, "Spliff has always been around the recording studio - and George spends hours in there every day.

"He wakes quite early and is often straight down to the studio. That's when the spliffs start.

"He may take a lot of drugs but he's still an incredible talent. I've heard the new songs he's written and they are the best since FAST LOVE 10 years ago."

Michael suffered depression after losing Feleppa to AIDS in 1993, while his mother LESLEY died in 1997.

Georgiou adds, "He has never recovered. The pain has never really stopped for him. That's where all this comes from.

"Spliffs help George get through the day. That was the only way to deaden the pain. So that's what we used to do from morning until night. And for George it hasn't changed."
