Former EAST 17 frontman TONY MORTIMER blames his departure from the 1990s boyband for sparking his battle with alcohol.
The IF YOU EVER singer quit the chart-topping British group when gruelling schedules took their toll on his physical and mental health, but admits his subsequent boredom almost turned him into an alcoholic.
He says, "When I left the band, I was on the road to self-destruction. Suddenly I had nothing to do every day - so I'd go into my recording studio and be looking at my watch - waiting for midday... when I decided I could have a drink.
"I was drinking Jack Daniels and coke a lot and could feel I was in danger of becoming an alcoholic, so I knocked it on the head once and for all."
Mortimer quit the booze with his girlfriend TRACEY DAVIES four years ago.
He adds, "Now I'm confident alcohol will never touch my lips again."
