WEINSTEINS INVOLVED IN MOVIE RIGHTS FEUD

Movie moguls HARVEY and BOB WEINSTEIN are involved in a legal battle with Columbia Pictures over the film and TV rights to books by the late CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON author WANG DU LU.

The former Miramax bosses filed a lawsuit against Columbia in Los Angeles last week (ends14APR06) in an attempt to keep them away from four other novels by the Chinese writer.

The brothers hope to make a LORD OF THE RINGS-style franchise of movies from the books, which are based on the historical Qing dynasty.

Columbia made Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon when Harvey missed out on the Du Lu books at an auction, however the brothers are currently working on a Broadway musical version of the film.

The suit claims Columbia entered into an oral agreement with Lu Du's heirs in 2005, however, the Weinsteins claims this agreement was made by a representative of Lu Du's heirs, who didn't have the authority to make such an agreement.

Their lawsuit seeks an official declaration that only they possess the rights to make films out of the four remaining Lu Du books.
