LATEST: A 28-year-old man was charged yesterday (14APR06) in relation to the shooting incident in a Michigan nightclub, which took the life of D-12 rapper PROOF.

Detroit-native MARIO ETHERIDGE was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and discharge of a firearm in a building after he surrendered to cops on Wednesday (12APR06). Hip-hop star Proof, real name DESHAUN HOLTON, was fatally wounded during an altercation inside Detroit's CCC nightclub in the early hours of Tuesday (11APR06). A second shooting victim, KEITH BENDER, 35, is currently in hospital in a critical condition. Local police say witnesses claim Etheridge shot Proof after the rapper fired at Bender. Etheridge's attorney insists the shooting was in self-defence and he should not be charged. Despite declining to reveal whether or not Etheridge fired the gun, his lawyer RANDALL UPSHAW says, "If anyone discharged the weapon, it was in defence of others or themselves. "If it takes discharging a weapon to save a life, then I find it disturbing that you would be charged with discharging a weapon." If convicted, Etheridge faces a possible five years in prison.
