RIOTS AT PUNK CONCERT

Fans were injured and two police cars destroyed when riots broke out at an all-day punk concert in California yesterday (04MAR06).

The disturbance was sparked by the arrival of police officers investigating a reported stabbing at the National Orange Show Events Centre in San Bernardino.

The concert, showcasing British punk talent, saw officers pelted with rocks and bottles as they rescued the knife wound victim, and another audience member who had been beaten.

Police responded by firing tear gas on the 1,500-strong crowd to disperse troublemakers.

Two patrol cars were destroyed in the subsequent fray, a rubbish bin set on fire and a string of shop windows were smashed.

Two officers suffered minor injuries while the two people wounded in the concert were rushed to hospital in a serious condition.

The gig was scheduled to feature 22 up-and-coming UK punk rock bands.
