PUTTNAM: 'CLOONEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN BEST DIRECTOR'

LORD PUTTNAM insisted GEORGE CLOONEY should have been named Best Director when he picked up his Academy Fellowship Award at this evening's BAFTAs.

THE KILLING FIELDS producer, who was honoured with a standing ovation for his contribution to modern cinema, insists Clooney was the worthy winner because of the personal sacrifices he made and dedication he displayed in bringing GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK to the big screen.

He says, "He puts his career on the line. He's been politically committed and has taken big cuts in his salary to make these kinds of films.

"My hope is that other film-makers will do that too. I'm sorry that Clooney didn't win Best Director because of what he put himself through."
