`Text kitten' promotes phone campaign
After a session of nauseating sexual wordplay to promote Virgin Mobile's text-messaging campaign for Valentine's Day — an event that enlisted actress Pamela Anderson — it was bound to happen.
Flimsy sex talk can sustain a story for only so long before even the horniest of reporters becomes bored. But who would guess that an earnest search for a harder news story would lead into the territory of "anal electrocution"?
Wearing a tight T-shirt that said "Text Kitten," the former Playboy model sat on a red chair in the shape of lips to help Virgin Mobile unveil its latest campaign.
"I've been having text for a very long time," Anderson, 38, told reporters before climbing onto the lap of a company representative.
"I've ended (a relationship) by text."
The Toronto media briefing also involved the release of the company's new book, The Joy of Text: Your Guide to a More Satisfying Text Life.
"I do it to myself," Anderson, star of the Fox sitcom Stacked, said about the act of text messaging. "Everywhere and all the time, and a lot — and my fingers do get tired."
Anderson, who hails from Ladysmith, B.C., became more serious when asked about her work on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
In November, Anderson wrote a letter to Loblaw — Canada's largest supermarket chain — urging them to label eggs that come from caged hens.
"(Loblaw's officials) haven't really responded well," Anderson said in an interview after the event. "I think it's just their responsibility to put a label (on eggs). Like with anything, you know. I wish fur coats had little notes inside that said, you know, `I was anally electrocuted.' "
A Loblaw spokesman responded to her letter last year by saying that labelling and packaging eggs is the responsibility of its suppliers and the federal government.
