DAVIES DELIGHTED MUSIC INDUSTRY IS NO LONGER FULL OF FREAKS

THE KINKS star RAY DAVIES is glad the music business has become more professional because he's no longer confronted by oddballs masquerading as executives, promoters and road managers.

The WATERLOO SUNSET rocker and his band once came into contact with US serial killer JOHN WAYNE GACY, when he was a concert promoter and another off-kilter tour manager once held Davies hostage with a gun.

Davies admits the colourful characters have been replaced by businessmen - and it's a good thing.

He says, "I was threatened by a promoter with a gun. He was taking us back to the hotel after a sound check, and he said, 'I've got a f**king gun, man. If you don't listen to me...'

"He may have been joking, but it certainly scared me a bit.

"There's a lot of weird people out there. Rock music, not so much now but in the pioneering days, attracted a lot of people who thought it was some sort of cultish behaviour.

"Rock music sucked up everything from the culture and drew it to the surface, good and bad. It was a magnet for that kind of stuff."
