Mrs. horn was one of the greatest Jazz pianist died last Thursday.
Shirley called her music like painting a picture. She wanted her listeners to try to visualize what she was playing for them. Shirley was one of the last Jazz singers of this generation that knew how to move people who listened to her. Her talent lied in playing the piano and when she sung along with her playing it like hearing a beautiful story. She did all kinds of songs but her specialty was slow, melody song. She never took her music and talent for granted. Shirley did not believe in rushing. She was a strong, steady, powerful singer. As a girl she was accepted to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York but could not afford it so she went to Howard University for Gifted Children, according to Seattle Times. There she worked with many great Jazz musicians. Her first three albums were all recorded all in one year 1954. She never liked to tour but only perform concerts near home, Washington, D.C. Shirley was nominated 8 times for Grammy's and won in 1988, plus she was honored for several other awards in the early 21st century. Shirley had diabetes, arthritis and breast cancer. She started becoming ill for the first part of the 21st century and never really recovered. She died at her home Thursday night at 71. She will be greatly missed.
