Great Bluegrass musician, Vassar Clements died of cancer.
Vassar Clements died of cancer at 77. He was the famous fiddler of bluegrass. Some said he was the Miles Davis of bluegrass. Clements talent began at 14 when he started performing with Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in 1949. Seven years with the Blue Grass Boys, Vassar joined Jim & Jesse McReynolds. Later he played banjo with star Earl Scruggs. According to Reuters, the president of the Bluegrass Music Association Dan Hayes said, “Vassar Clements was very talented and acclaimed by the early pioneers as well as his incredible music in recent years.” One of his works was a milestone in his career that lasted for over five years; the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (multi-artist album) in 1972. This milestone album was called, “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”. Vassar Clement was a very humble musician. He never bragged how good he was, instead he was always kind to all and treated everyone as a friend or part of his family. His fiddle playing set a foundation for the next thirty years to aspiring fiddlers. Clements was a amazing fiddle performer. He played with many great performers like the Grateful Dead, Linda Ronstadt, David Grisman and Paul McCartney. Clements also knew how to play many other instruments other than the fiddle. He played the cello, bass, mandolin, guitar and tenor banjo. Vassar Clements was honored the award, ‘as a first-pioneer of bluegrass music’, at the IBMA ceremony in 2001.
