Steve Carell plays a 40-year-old virgin.

Carell has played many comical roles in sitcoms to big screen movies but never had a role that he felt parallel to his own persona. The character has a serious side that Steve Carell can relate, too. He plays a 40 year old, sympathetic, video game fanatic, obsessive toy collector virgin. This character does not represent the squirrelly guy that lives down the street and rides bikes at 40. Instead a guy who just decided not to do the deed for one reason or another. There are many normal people in our society today that just give up on the notion of ever getting laid or the pressure is too much for them. Carell explains after reading many case studies on the subject. (Source: Zap2it) In the beginning of the movie Carell confesses to his poker buddies that he is a virgin. The teasing then begins. Andy, the characters name, brings a certain comical side to 40-year-old virgin. Metaphorically Steve’s performance tears down the house of society stereotypes, of being a virgin at such a late age and being real. Andy, the 40-year-old virgin, is always trying to do his best to get through life, be a good person and to have a positive attitude. Explains Carell.
